2nd iMobility Forum Plenary Meeting: Paving the way to Cooperative ITS Standardisation

On 23 May, the first day will commence by presenting the latest achievements of each of the Forum's Working Groups activities, covering all the major topics within ITS for safe, smart and clean mobility fields. The second part of the session will provide information related to items such as the organisation of the sessions and the EU-US Joint showcase at the Vienna ITS World Congress as well as informing the audience of the European Large Scale Action on ICT for Transport (SATIE), and its benefits.

On 24 May, this day’s session of the 2nd iMobility Forum Plenary Meeting will be dedicated to Cooperative ITS Standardisation. The objective of this session is to keep the ITS stakeholders informed on the latest news and developments in standards relevant to Cooperative ITS at a European and international level. The session will continue with a round table discussion on stakeholder views on this topic.

Despite the numerous advantages of standardisation for research and innovation, standardisation can often seem complex, difficult to access, with too lengthy procedures.

The session will be concluded by presenting the results of the questionnaire developed by iCar Support in order to gather views and needs of the stakeholders on the topic to the audience.

CEN/TC 278's Evolving Programme of Work

Over the past decade the programme of work of CEN/TC 278 has evolved significantly. New topics have emerged, resulting in the establishment of new working groups, and a growing number of projects. Several charts showing these changes can be found in the recently published paper "CEN/TC 278's Evolving Programme of Work".

C-ITS Workshop NL

On Friday, March 2, NEN and RWS jointly organize a free workshop on intelligent transportation systems
(ITS) and interoperability, e.g. co-operative ITS (C-ITS). During this workshop, various (international)
speakers will talk about C-ITS: what C-ITS is, what it can do and the importance of interoperability.

If there's enough interest, there will be a guided tour Friday morning at the High Tech Automotive Campus
in Helmond, including a visit to DITCM. DITCM is a permanent testing environment for innovative and
intelligent traffic systems under development.

Liaison established with FIA Europe

CEN/TC 278 has established a liaison with FIA, the “Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile”. FIA is a worldwide federation of Motoring and Touring Clubs, bringing together some 220 member clubs in five continents. In the European Union, the FIA represents more than 35 million motoring consumers via its 71 member clubs.

FIA's Pan-European representation ensures technical expertise in ITS road safety. This position enables FIA to be in a position to contribute to the development of standard, particularly those developed in the Working Group 15 “eSafety”. Open call for experts on EFC (DL 2012-03-01)

CEN/TC 278 is recruiting paid experts for Project Teams in the field of Electronic Fee Collection. This call for experts applies to the preparation of the deliverables associated with the following two tasks as defined in the Grant Agreement:

A draft Technical Specification EFC - Secure monitoring for autonomous toll systems – Compliance checking.
A draft Technical Report EFC - Guidelines for EFC-applications based on in-vehicle ITS Stations.

Interested experts are invited to download the call for EFC and submit their applications before 1 March 2012.

CEN/TC 278 is recruiting paid experts for a Project Team in the field of C-ITS. This call for experts applies to the preparation of the deliverables associated with the following two tasks as defined in the Grant Agreement:

A draft Technical Specification Co-operative Systems - Classification and management of ITS applications in a global context
A draft Technical Specification Co-operative Systems - ITS application requirements for selection of communication profiles

Interested experts are invited to download the call for experts on C-ITS and submit their applications before 21 May 2012.

New project teams

Three new project teams were established recently. These project teams will be responsible for preparing draft European standards in the area of eCall and EFC.

Reactivation of CEN/TC 278/WG2

In response to the ITS action plan a proposal will be submitted for reactivating CEN/TC 278/WG2 to deal with new activities on the topic of Freight and Fleet Management Systems.

The effective and efficient movement of freight is essential to the social and economic well being of a modern society. However freight movement presents many challenges for all stakeholders including the commercial and private sector, government at all levels, consumers and the general public. The application of the ICT technologies to freight and the operation of commercial vehicles has the potential to realise efficiencies and benefits in several areas.

CEN TC278 established a Working Group on Freight and Fleet Management systems (FFMS) – its Working Group 2, but during the earlier years of ITS standardisation this WG lacked sufficient impetus and expert involvement to make significant progress; WG2 was placed in a dormant state 12 years ago.

However the landscape of ITS deployment and standardisation has changed significantly in this time. The transport network becomes ever more congested, the greening of transportation is now high on the political agenda, security issues and civil protection are a forefront consideration and we live in an increasingly connected world where competitive advantage requires the streamlining and automation of processes.

New CEN/TC 278 website online

The current CEN/TC 278 website is replaced with a more user-friendly design and added functionalities. In addition to providing an overview of the work programme of CEN/TC 278, the new website will also function as a communication tool towards to the wider public.
